Yesterday was the birthday of one of my favorite living writers. He’s someone whose words have made a huge impression on me, whose stories made me dream and want to be a writer myself.
He’s Samuel R. Delany, Chip to his friends. This is a photo taken of him yesterday afternoon, on his 70th birthday, by Kyle Cassidy.
I don’t have many heroes left.
Happy Birthday for yesterday, Chip.
Four things:
- Swoon. Aye, and Gomorrah: And Other Stories is a magnificent collection and About Writing is one of the best texts on writing I’ve ever read.
- I’d love to know Samuel R. Delany well enough to call him “Chip.”
- You can usually tell if someone knows their chops in SF&F circles if they spell Delany’s name correctly (not Delaney).
- [Turns out] we had an amusing conversation with the photographer who took this shot while we waited for our car after the Gene Wolfe event (yes I am still talking about that incessantly).
