Sir Arthur C. Clarke, in his own words

2001 and its sequels, Rendezvous with Rama, Hammer of God, Childhood’s End. The three laws. The communications satellite.
Arthur C. Clarke will be remembered far better by his works than by anything I could add here.
But as you consider his passing and read the many remembrances that will populate the sphere in the next days, [...]

So it goes.

Saddened today by the loss of Kurt Vonnegut.
Best round-up of links is (as usual) at Ed Champion’s Return of the Reluctant.

New Poetry: Ken Rumble’s Key Bridge

Shout out! An old college pal of mine has published his first book! Ken Rumble’s Key Bridge is available now from Carolina Wren Press.
In Ken’s own words:
“The book is about coming into being and fading out again, birth, death, and rebirth. It’s set against the backdrop of Washington, DC, and focuses [...]

Elementary!

Break out the tweed: Douglas Johnston (the man behind DIY Planner and a million monkeys typing) is launching a new blog, A Study in Sherlock, “devoted to the life, times and influence of the Great Detective himself, perhaps the most famous fictional character in history.”

As Johnston posted on a million monkeys typing:

There’s a tonne [...]

Oh, no. Octavia Butler gone

Octavia Butler, MacArthur genius grant recipient and author of one of my favorite skiffy novels (Parable of the Talents), has died in what sounds like a terrible situation.

She was only 58.

“The Transcendent Tigers” by R.A. Lafferty: An Appreciation

My appreciation of R.A. Lafferty’s "The Trancendent Tigers" has been posted to the EDSF project. Check it out, along with the many other fine appreciations, and be thankful for the fine work SCIFICTION has given us over the years…
Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Let Us Now Praise Famous Shorts

Jayaprakash (criminalenglish) praises Ted Chiang.

My 2 cents: Chiang has written some of the best speculative short fiction published in the last decade. Read his collection.

Netizens are rallying to memorialize the soon-to-be-defunct SCIFICTION site at the Ellen Datlow/SCI FICTION Project. Sign up now to participate.

I’ll be contributing an appreciation of "The Transcendent [...]

Annoying placeholder phrases in fiction

There are certain phrases that seem to recur in stories, phrases that strike me every time as either lazy, cliche or both. One that particularly irks me arises when describing a character’s post-waking rituals: "Character performed his daily ablutions." Now, "daily ablutions" are a particular form of ritualized washing that are part of Hindu (and [...]

“I’m postulating a kind of randomness” - Nice Niffenegger writeup

Local CBPA faculty turned instant-classic author Audrey Niffenegger talks to the Guardian about the success of Time-Traveler’s Wife and her new book The Three Incestuous Sisters. I took a quick look at The Three Incestuous Sisters over the weekend and it looks bee-yoot-iful.

American (genre) Gods

Neil Gaiman and Joss Whedon shoot the breeze for Time Magazine. Somebody pls chastise Time’s proofreader for misspelling Josh Whedon’s name on the headline…
